about Dr. SUdhir Hegde

Dr.Sudhir Hegde, at present Co-Convener of BJP Karnataka Medical Wing Dakshina Kannada District. Professor and Head of Department of Ophthalmology at A. J Institute of Medical Sciences, Consultant at A.J Hospital and Research Centre, Mangalore. Also practicing at clinic Sanjeevini at Falnir in Mangalore. President of South Kanara Ophthalmic Society. Is Elected as organising Chairman of South India Ophthalmology Conference to be held on December of 2018.

The fourth child of late Shankar Hegde a college lecturer and Sulochana Hegde a home maker, Dr. Sudhir Hegde was born and raised in Karkala. He has an elder brother and two elder sisters. Dr. Sudhir Hegde had his schooling in Karkala, talented with exemplary oration skills Dr. Hegde was always the leader in the making since childhood from winning class elections to being President of valedictory of Makkala Sammelana when he was studying in class 6. Involving himself in sports and other activities Dr. Hegde has participated in Volleyball, High jump and long jumpduring High School. Also achieving A and B certificates in NCC Navy.

He decided to be a doctor and attended Manipal Kasturba Medical College for MBBS and Dr. BRAMC in Bangalore for MS with specialization in Ophthalmology. He returned to Moodbidri to set up a private practice as an Eye Surgeon in August 2000. Imbibed teaching from his late father he also started teaching in AJ Hospital in Mangalore. But his restless soul, which had manifested itself earlier and drawn him towards the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, persuaded him to take up projects for the betterment of society. In RSS Mr. V.S Acharya was very influential on young Dr. Sudhir. He retains the Swayamsevak’s tendency to downplay the “Swayam” giving precedence to “Seva”.

Known for his remarkable achievements Dr. Sudhir Hegde maintains a very low profile. A non-smoker and teetotaller, he believes in the medical efficacy of yoga and physical exercises. Very fond among his patients he is known for his simplicity and work place ethics. Being in a noble profession of saving lives Dr. Hegde has done above 40,000 surgeries and consultancies free of cost for the poor and needy. In association with prestigious NGO’s such as Sakshama he is involved in Free Eye check up and surgery camps in and around Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. Dr. Hegde has also helped many other patients to get free surgeries who suffer from other diseases such as cancer.

Dr Sudhir Hegde is a member of several prestigious organisations in not only the medical field, but also culture, diplomacy and related areas. Has presented research papers at several national and international medical conferences. He has also contributed to the world’s leading medical journals and has travelled in many countries, where he has visited centres of excellence to learn and consider the relevance of sustainable developments in the Indian context. He has contributed articles on environmentalism, medical ethics and progressive issues to mainstream media. Experts from all over the world consult him and he is regularly invited abroad to address gatherings of medical practitioners and social activists.

Dr. Hegde is acting president of Dakshina Kannada Ophthalmic Society from 2016. Has served as Vice-President of International association of Ophthalmologist. He was supporting the quality of education in Medical Studies at Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Education as member of Board of Studies from 2012-13. Has done Observer ship at Paediatric Ophthalmology at Singapore National Eye Hospital in 2005.
